See also the Merry Widow hat, large menacing hatpins, women's riding habits in the 18th century, and other delights. I think some contemporary equivalents might include dapper fashion, bold lipstick, and full goth gear. (Rock on!)
Straight men dressing for other straight men is very "My taste is saltine crackers when it comes to color and style, hope it doesn't violate the bro dress code". The bulk of straight men in the West could stand to take a few cues from the sapeurs of Brazzaville and Kinshasa. Have you seen those guys? They dress gorgeously and they're not ashamed of it in the least. It's the closest male equivalent I've seen to "Your eyeliner (or lippie) looks fly".
But then again, a lot of women’s fashion is women dressing for women. Which is superb. And it’s always been that way. The poke bonnet, large bustles and hoop skirts. Men hated those things so much they made comics about them in the newspaper and women liked them so they kept wearing them. To this day you see the phenomenon in women’s comments sections where a woman will show her outfit or makeup and all the women will cheer her on and there will be straight men like “You look like shit and no man likes that.” and she’ll be like “Awesome. Fuck you. I’m dressing for my friends, not you.”
The problem is that straight men will dress for other straight men and get angry women do not find it attractive. Women will dress for other women and be happy another woman paid her a compliment and not be sobbing and rolling around at the thought men don’t find her huge eyeliner sexy. Men will go out of their way to say “You’re never getting a man looking like that. Dudes hate unnatural hair colors and tattoos and piercings.” under a lesbian’s post. A woman posts a picture of her with her boyfriend and there are rabid incel gymbros in the comments like “Why is this ugly dude getting bitches and I can’t get laid???” Probably because you aren’t listening to women and don’t care what they think or want.

Blog #7 - The Kairos Challenge - Political Fashion
Political Fashion paved its way for Modern Fashion
Let’s talk about Denim and its integral part in today's Fashion. Both Men and Women wear Fashion making the piece unisex. From Jeans, to Denim shirts, skirts, and jackets. Denim is officially universal. It has been created since the 1850s and has gained popularity after World War 2 in 1939. This marks the start of its political career. Denim has begun to be worn by Rosie Riveter, the staple of the Women’s movement during the 1940s.

This picture aims to represent some of the first Women to join the workforce. The photo provides a message of Women being strong and being able to execute the same jobs as Men. It reinforces the idea of strong Women. Also, looking into the photo I dig a deeper meaning that to me it translates as Men wear Jeans in which Women can too. They too can participate in Men Masculinity. The Denim in the photo is precisely called a Denim collared shirt, which is still popular today. The item is collared up with rolled sleeves which side note is also a trend. The rolled sleeve adds to a more casual look. This translates to today’s modern Fashion. Often times it's replicated for Halloween or used in one’s everyday look. It’s nicely paired with Denim over Denim and with a red hair tie.

In the third photo, you see a Woman pairing her Denim collared shirt with White jeans which is also another look that looks nicely paired when together. Denim says ‘Women can do it as well as anyone!’

The Women’s movement helped birth many other social issues as Equal Pay also known as The Gender Pay Gap. Below you have a Woman holding the sign ‘Equal Pay NOW!’. What sparks my interest is the foretelling of the Fashion the photo gives off. The Woman is wearing an elegant pea coat with Fur on the collar and she’s paired it with fitted leather gloves. Winter of 2020 many popular stores like Macy, Guess, Michael Kors, and etc are selling the exact same Winter Coat. The fitted gloves as well were a recent purchase of mine which sets an outfit eloquently must I say.

The fight for Equal Opportunities still continues with Women protesting in a stylish manner proving that they aren’t less as a Man and should be treated fairly in the workplace. The Women holding the ‘Demand Equal Pay for Equal work’. All those Women have in common what Women now wear which are Pencil Skirts. Some of the Skirts I notice are made of leather, Jeans, wool, and cloth. It’s truly astonishing seeing the resemblance in today’s world. Lastly, we can’t forget about how the Skirts are paired with strapped shoes, and closed shoes. How they pair these items is how one would pair them today. There classiness and elegancy represents how Women should be viewed modestly. Also, how they shouldn’t be treated by what they wear and what their gender is but as human being who deserves equal rights.
During the 1960s -1970s The movement that rose trying to create peace among the Vietnam War. Although very controversial, one of the many protesters were what they considered ‘Hippies’. The Vietnam War led many ‘Hippies’ to protest against these social wars but in style. Here we have a picture many of you might recognize with the infamous ‘Jimmi Hendrix’. Jimmy’s rocking the fringe in the color White with Blue adornments. Which I must say Fringe is very much used today in dresses, shirs, Jean Jackets, shorts, and etc. Another important piece that Hendrix happens to be wearing is what they call Bohemian pants they are tight at the top and open wide at the bottom. These Fashion pieces were way ahead of its time because these pieces are used today. Also, while at the same time giving off a political statement that they signify peace during these times at war.

Accompanied by the glasses here we also have the legend himself John Lennon below wearing a trendy Jean Jacket with added designs in the color Red. He paired the Jacket with what looks like a Octogonal Hat which is frequently used today. May I add this particular Hat actually had just come back in style. I’m actually obsessed! I have one to many of these hats. John Lennon is giving off the impression of ‘Power to the people’ and makes it known through his pieces that he belongs to the ‘Hippie community’ in which they perpetuate ‘Love not War’.

MA Fashion and Textile Practices Major Project Path - 4th September
Punk and Vivienne Westwood
Whilst the punk scene was on the slight decline in the US, the UK punk scene was only just emerging. Many new bands such as The Clash and The Damned had been influenced by this American hard rock sound from over the pond, particularly by Iggy Pop and The Stooges, MC5 and The Ramones. Malcolm McLaren, along with The Damned and The Clash’s management realised that something big was brewing within the current music scene - there was something in the air. When you think of the UK punk scene, it is guaranteed that most people will think of the Sex Pistols - but the first UK band to release a punk single was The Damned with ‘New Rose’.
youtube
The Damned [Rafael Lage]. (2016, Jan 1). The Damned - New Rose (Official Video) [Video file]. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThcXEqxI_IQ
The Damned had formed in 1976, four lads from London who had all been in various bands prior to the initial line-up. They were signed to Stiff records the same year and released their debut single ‘New Rose’ from their forthcoming album Damned Damned Damned - released in 1977. The scene at the time was very incestuous, many of the bands socialised with each other and as the US scene, collaboration was key in progressing the scene forward. One place where the bands would meet was The Kings Road, here a mix of alternative fashion and punk music combined to inspire and shock in equal measure. Dave Venian (2019) - lead singer of The Damned said of his cohorts back then:
“It was funny because in those early years you’d meet people of similar interest and they would invariably look different then the normal person on the street.”
Johnny Rotten (2019) of the Sex Pistols said of the punk aesthetic:
“Before the leather jackets and the studs was true punk, which was a miss match of things. Maybe one designer piece, but you’d have to make sure the designer was the right one, and the right one at the time was Vivienne Westwood.”
Vivienne Westwood’s store SEX (previously called Let It Rock) was un-surprisingly on The Kings Road, so a natural haven for this new wave of youth wanting to look different than the ‘normal person on the street’. Johnny Rotten was possibly somewhat biased because Westwood was the girlfriend of the Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren and joint owner of the shop. Viv Albertine (2019) of The Slits was so inspired by Westwood’s attitude and fashion sense that she began to write songs and eventually form her own band:
“Vivienne would take something like a T-shirt, or a batch of T-shirts from India, they didn’t look right, the collars weren’t right, the sleeves weren't right and so she’d cut the collars off, cut off the sleeves, cut the bottom off and couldn’t be bothered to sew them and leave them frayed. She would write something on them that was really powerful, really shocking that’s going to grab attention across the front, and what that taught me is that it doesn’t matter if you sing a bit out of tune or out of time, but what have you got to say?”

Dazed Digital, n.d. (2015). Vivienne Westwood wears the controversial Destroy T-shirt . [Photograph]. Retrieved from https://www.dazeddigital.com/fashion/article/24335/1/vivienne-westwood-s-top-ten-political-moments.
Vivienne apparently had a lot to say. Above is one of her more controversial designs, which featured a large red swastika, an upturned Christ on the cross and a postage stamp of the Queen, above them is the word ‘DESTROY’. The red swastika alone would cause some attention, and she knew it. The T-shirt was meant to make comment in regards to standing up against powerful dictators around the globe who were violating peoples basic human rights. In a broader sense it was saying to the older generation that the younger generation would not tolerate their preset values and attitudes. The T-shirt was sold at her Kings Road store SEX.
Fashion and music have always been intertwined but at this time was even more so. Clothes were making a statement, they reflected the attitude of the youth and of the music they listened to. One band were less about the way they looked and more about the politics of the time - that band was The Clash. The Clash were again four lads from London who formed in the same year as The Damned; 1976. The Clash’s influences were from Heavy Rock to Reggae. Reggae surprisingly made a significant impact on the UK punk scene, and The Clash often used elements of the Reggae sound within their own music. Joe Strummer from The Clash felt that their music really should have something to say about what was going on in the world, as Reggae always had done. He really believed that music could bring about social change. In an interview Joe (1977) said as such:
“I think we can definitely change something. I mean, look at the 60′s, what do you remember from the 60′s? All I can remember is the music, music is what people are turning on to in the last 30, 40 years, not books or art. So we have more chance than anybody to change things.”
youtube
The Clash [The Clash]. (2013, Sept 4). The Clash - White Riot (Official Video) [Video file]. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvG3is7Bm1w
The Clash’s first release was called ‘White Riot’ which was immediately mistaken as a song inciting a race war, where it was in fact about unifying races and standing up to the authorities. The song was actually inspired by the Notting Hill Carnival riot in west London an 1976, which was a peaceful event until the police arrested a pickpocket and violence broke out. Members of The Clash were the carnival at the time and got caught up the rioting between the police and a mixture of black and white carnival goers. Around 60 crowd members were injured and over 100 police officers.

The British youth of the 1970′s had a lot of things to get angry about. At the beginning of the 70′s there were high rates of inflation which contributed to frequent striking by coal miners. Their union, along with other public sector unions were fighting for higher wages for their workers, and the strikes caught the attention of the government and public alike. Labour held power in the country between 1974-1979 until Margaret Thatcher was voted into power. She privatised many of the UK’s major industries which led to high unemployment rates and the de-activation of many of the coal mines throughout the country.

Vivienne Westwood AW19 Catwalk review

Below shows my Vivienne Westwood AW19 review. The review is relevant to my magazine as Westwood speaks of environmental issues that will effect the future of the youth of today. She fights for us and therefore I thought it was very fitting to the style of my magazine that targets a youthful age group
Protests, an unavoidable part of fashion week; some more thought provoking that others. Some called upon the supporters of fashion week to ‘stop’ due to poor production standards (un-rightly in many eyes due to them wearing clothes themselves, to me this was something that should have been better thought through before putting on the streets as everywhere they seemed to be receiving abuse, but I mean, this was fashion week?) Shortly down the road, situated at St. John smith square, standing outside the Vivienne Westwood AW 19 show waiting for it to begin, the sound from the peaceful protest by extinction rebellion could be faintly heard. However, this time fighting for something much more understandable, for the government to treat the threats of global warming and extinction more seriously. And with this, just as had been going on outside the shows on the streets of London, Westwood herself was about to present something of a similarity inside as part of her new season collection.
That iconic tartan print, sharp structured satin boned corsets; a deep sea of all things Westwood flooded St john smith square. With the guests seated the stained-glass church doors closed and inside something spectacular, controversial and thought provoking. This season, once again, Westwood took to the catwalk to make yet another political stance, but this time, something out of the ordinary. Westwood’s show was constructed in such way to put heavy blame on fuel companies for the extreme amounts of consumption, specifically shell and the way that the government continually lets them to thrive. Her theatrical approach which consisted of vigilant yet motivational spoken work: short speeches, mini monologues and even a short serenade from the women herself, you could say turned more than just the odd head and left her audience wanting to make a change. “7 billion people don’t know the truth” Westwood told the audience in a voice over while she marched, walked or danced her models down the central catwalk. “If we continue unknowingly in the way we do”, says Westwood, “there will only by 1 billion of us left on the planet by the close of the century” Shocking her audience and explaining to them the damage they are knowingly causing whilst being so unknowledgeable about the leading consequences. Westwood also sent the director of Green peace to the stage to alert the crowd of the eye watering statistics that supported Westwood’s horrific statement along with many other of her close activist friends including Rose McGowan who I was also lucky enough to meet outside after the show.

It wasn’t just Westwood’s sporadic yet dramatic performance that had the audience talking, of course the collection itself was strictly Westwood. Defined from her punk roots, bleach splat denim, mini embroidered kilt inspired skirts, dresses were tightly corseted front to back and each fabric individually hand painted. As punk rock as the collection sounds, it also had a sporadic elegance about it. Combining her iconic features with the trends of today we witnessed Westwood send her models down the catwalk in draped oversized knitted sweats that smothered the petite frame of the models. Typical to Westwood, sloganized shirts and trousers with phrases that read things such as ‘Consumption is the enemy’and ‘buy less’ some may say this was an odd approach to promoting your new collection however, never the less she was doing so with such meaning and power. Saving the best elements till last, how could we not forget the satin peach toned ball gown that Westwood sent flowing down the runway like a sea of destruction. Not to add that she presented it on a slightly more mature model than you would once think, but for this she was greatly respected, and the crowd, truly appreciative. Just as we always will be when Westwood is involved.

A brutally yet refreshingly honest performance from Westwood herself to present her motivational Autumn/Winter 19 collection, leaving her audience with a thriving sense of hope to relieve destruction in the world. Finishing the show with a joyful song from herself to lift the underlying mood, weaving through the models as they line up for their final view, scared faces turned to smiles, despair into inspiration, and yet her political stance was made. Thought provoking to say the least but Westwood definitely led her models onto the after party having successfully prevailed, her message clear and her audience struck, just as she does best.

Don’t Wish Happy Women’s Day – It’s A Shame For What It Is Today
Since morning my phone continues to be buzzing off the hook with ” happy womans day ” wishes, little flower emoticons and all sorts of. One of them says that ‘Hope your day has the sunshine as well as flowers and happy thoughts to fill the home. Happy Womans Day.” Another one says, “Happy Womans Day,” like one would wish Happy Birthday to a person you haven’t met however is on your Facebook friend list for no known reason.
Each one of these wishes comes from my male friends. I guess in this environment of volatile gender discussions; my friends are only politically correct without actually understanding the relevance of the words.
Happy International Women’s Day:
I do not understand the importance of celebrating an International Women’s Day either. Shall we be celebrating the significant number of men and women who fought non-stop in early 20th century to bring gender equality? Are we celebrating women, for example Simone de Beauvoir, author of the feminist bible The Second Sex, as well as Gloria Steinem, author, journalist as well as feminist, who said “The story of women’s struggle for equality is associated with no single feminist neither to any one organisation however to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.”
If we are not celebrating these people, then let’s start today. In the end, if it were not for a whole generation before us we would not be sitting smugly now writing articles on gender equality as well as voting for a government in our choice, or raising flags on rapes as well as domestic violence. So just why not we start the happy international women’s day by showing some gratitude to people who fought the battle for us since we take it forward for “equal rights”!
Discussion on gender equality and equal rights goes beyond the role of a woman in her social and residential environment. It is usually why I’ve found the objective of a day dedicated to women rather retrogressive in the present social milieu.
I’m willing to be inspired by Chris Rock’s opening statement in the Academy Awards this year. In the Marty-ish way, he hit the nail on the head when asked the reason why this year’s Oscars is about racial controversy if this was never raised in 86 years. Rock said, “Well, as we people were busy getting lynched as well as raped 86 years ago, therefore we did not give a black ass who took the awards!”, talking about the period when America was in the throes of racial discrimination, politically as well as socially.
It seems the Unites States of America is still.
So should we celebrate an International Black Day? Wow! That might be politically wrong.
Well, same with International Women’s Day. The battle might be over. Women around the globe face discrimination of some kind or the other. The idea of equal work and equal pay is far from reality. The reason why did you know that it costs 10 % more to dry clean a woman’s shirt than a man’s shirt? Yes, the next time looks at your laundry bill and does the math. We’re so way off the domestic violence chart we have to show government-sponsored ads in the media to teach people that it is a “punishable crime to beat up women.”
The French government-sponsored an advertisement developed by a fashion magazine against sexual harassment at workplace. In India, we’re still determining the fine print of some commission report that handles sexual harassment at the workplace! However, I am glad I can vote now.
At the same time, our corporates have taken it upon on their own to give every ad campaign they create a lame gender twist to be in tune with the social dialogue. There’s a campaign for a tea brand that shows a few drinking tea while experiencing the rain, and also the husband says some snacks would go well with the tea. The wife clears her throat, takes her own very good time, smiles and ultimately stammers something similar to, “Maybe it would taste better if you made it.” That’s gender equality for you: a wife meekly asking the husband to make some pakoda(a dish), and also feeling very liberated!
There’s another one where the husband gives a “surprise” gift to his wife! Voila! An attractively remodeled kitchen is in her favorite color. Now if that does not make her happy what’s going to?
Shall we give this patronizing attitude a break?
Gender dialogues aren’t lines for Hallmark cards. Neither will they be made the decision over a chai pe charcha as well as panel discussions. However, I am sure they’ll help.
Background of happy international women’s day:
Much progress has been created to protect and promote women’s rights in recent years. Nevertheless, nowhere in the world can women claim that they can have all the same rights and possibilities as men, based on the UN. A lot of the worlds 1.3 billion absolute poor are women. Typically, women receive between 30 and 40 % less pay than men earn for the similar work. Women also continue being victims of violence, along with rape and domestic violence listed as significant reasons for disability and death among women globally.
The first happy women’s day took place on March 19 in 1911. The first event, including rallies and organized meetings, was a significant achievement in countries for example Austria, Germany, Denmark, and Switzerland. The March 19th date was selected as it commemorated the day which the Prussian king promised introducing votes for ladies in 1848. The promise gave hope for equal rights however it was a promise that he failed to keep. The International Women’s Day date was transferred to March 8 in 1913.
The UN drew global focus on women’s issues in 1975 by calling for an International Women’s Year. Additionally, it organized the 1st conference on women in Mexico City that year. The UN General Assembly after that invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for Women’s Rights as well as International Peace in 1977. The day targeted to assist nations worldwide get rid of discrimination against women. Additionally, it focused on helping women acquire full and equal involvement in global development. International Men’s Day is also celebrated on November 19 every year.
So, in the end, appreciate all the happy international women’s day wishes as well as pink flower emoticons. I’ll call it a day when I do not have to watch “pakoda” ads as well as a march to India Gate, candle in hand, for that minor who had been raped and burnt in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Till then, wish you a Happy Men’s Day instead of happy women’s day to me.
